Centrally-acting anti-hypertensive agent that works by inhibiting activity of the sympathoexcitatory neurons that regulate arterial pressure. Considered to be a mixed agonist acting on both alpha-2-adrenoreceptors and imidazoline receptors (I1-R). Moxonidine and rilmenidine are similar but more specific for I1 receptors.
